Hernando County and Florida Friendly Landscaping

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) focuses on creating attractive, low-maintenance landscapes using sustainable practices that conserve water, protect natural resources, and save money over time. Hernando County Utilities funds the Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program through the Water Conservation Department to help residents make smart, environmentally responsible choices for their yards.

 

Learn and Get Involved

Hernando County offers free educational classes and events designed to help residents put Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles into practice. Topics commonly include pollinator and butterfly gardening, proper turf care, water-saving techniques, responsible pest control, composting, rain harvesting, and more.

Resources & Requirements for New Developments

Landscaping Requirements for New Developments & HOAs

For new developments, the Builder/Developer shall provide new residential property owners with Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program materials and encourage the use of the principles, techniques, and landscaping recommendations.  Information on the County’s Fertilizer Ordinance and fertilizer use is to be included. Educational materials are available through Hernando County Utilities Department and can be viewed below:

Get Help from Volunteer Master Gardeners

Volunteer Master Gardeners are available to assist residents with lawn care and gardening questions through the Hernando County UF/IFAS Extension Office.
