Fertilizer Tips/Tricks
All fertilizer labels have three bold numbers these are three main nutrients for your lawn to thrive.
| These number indicate the percentage each nutrient by weight in the fertilizer. So, a 100 pound Bag of fertilizer with the label above would contain 12IBs of nitrogen. |
| 12 | 3 | 10 |
| Nitrogen | Phosphorus | Potassium |
UF/IFAS recommends 1IB of actual nitrogen, per 1000 sq. ft of turfgrass
Look for "slow release" source of nitrogen at least 30% of nitrogen in your application must be from a slow release source. These ingredients will be listed on the label.
Common slow release sources include urea-formaldehyde (38%) nitrogen, methylene-urea (40%) nitrogen, Isobutylene-diurea (31%) nitrogen, Sulfur coated-urea (36-39%) nitrogen, and polymer coated-urea (40-44%) nitrogen
We typically have enough natural phosphorus in our soil. Try to select a fertilizer with low or 0 phosphorus rates.
