Floodplain Information
Hernando County follows the Flood Damage Prevention and Protection Ordinance, together with the Florida Building Code, to regulate development and activities within Special Flood Hazard Areas.
To determine whether a property lies within a mapped flood zone, residents can use the Property Appraiser’s GIS Digital Flood Map. The FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) remains the official source for all flood zone determinations.
In addition to FEMA mapping, Hernando County maintains local watershed data that may impact development but may not appear on FEMA’s maps. For accurate zoning and elevation requirements, residents should always contact the Zoning Division.
FEMA’s Map Service Center also allows property owners to check whether a Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) or Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) has been issued. These determinations may remove an entire property—or only a portion of it—from the floodplain and take precedence over existing Flood Insurance Rate Maps.
