About Code Compliance

The Hernando County Code Compliance Department is dedicated to promoting safe, sustainable growth while preserving the quality of life in our community through effective planning, building, and code compliance services.

Hernando County enforces property maintenance standards and zoning regulations to promote a safe, clean, and attractive community for all residents.
As a citizen, you can help maintain our neighborhoods by:

  • Checking with Development Services before building to see if a permit is required
  • Contacting Zoning or Code Compliance to confirm what is allowed in your zoning district
  • Keeping your property free of trash and debris
  • Concealing or removing inoperable vehicles
  • Keeping temporary signs on private property (not in county rights-of-way)

Working together helps preserve property values, community safety, and overall quality of life.

Anonymous Complaint Notice

In accordance with Florida Statute Chapter 2, Section 2-51(a)(2), Code Compliance Officers are prohibited from initiating enforcement proceedings based on anonymous complaints.

To file a complaint, the reporting individual must provide their name and address before enforcement can begin.

Exceptions apply if the code officer has reason to believe that a violation presents an imminent threat to public health, safety, or welfare, or may cause imminent destruction of habitat or sensitive resources.
