Hernando County Government Alerts Public to Fraudulent Water Inspection Scam
(Brooksville, FL) –. The Hernando County Utilities Department (HCUD) is warning residents about a recent scam targeting local homeowners.
A resident contacted HCUD customer service after two individuals went door-to-door in his neighborhood claiming to be from the Utilities Department. The individuals requested access to homes to test water quality for impurities. The resident became suspicious when he noticed they were not driving official County vehicles. He declined to let them enter his home and promptly contacted HCUD’s official customer service number.
This scam is alarming, and HCUD is taking immediate action to alert residents and protect them from potential scams or dangerous situations.
When conducting official business and visiting properties, Hernando County employees will always display proper identification, including:
- An official County badge
- A clearly marked County vehicle
Residents are urged to beware of scams. Before providing personal information or allowing access to your property, confirm that the individual is a verified Hernando County employee displaying the identification listed above.
If you encounter suspicious individuals or receive questionable phone calls, do not provide personal information or grant access to your property. Report the incident immediately to HCUD at 352-754-4037 or email hcudcs@hernandocounty.us. If you feel you are in immediate danger, call 911.
