Environmentally Sensitive Land

The Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL) Program is dedicated to the protection and management of County Preserves for their natural resources and recreational uses compatible with conservation. The program and initial funding was voter approved in 1988.

The program supports Preserves and County projects in environmentally sensitive habitats that:

Hernando County’s natural, cultural, and scenic resources, are being preserved and enhanced for our quality of life on the Adventure Coast. 

Benefits of Sensitive Lands to our Communities:

  • Protection of water quality for our rivers, estuaries, springs, and drinking water;

  • Protection of water recharge areas;

  • Preservation and restoration of sensitive wildlife habitats and scenic  landscapes;

  • Nature-based recreational opportunities;

  • Ecotourism provides tourist tax revenue; and

  • Provide outdoor educational experiences.

A: The ESL Program was created in 1988 through voter referendum and is designed for the preservation and management of natural resources on conservation lands owned or managed by Hernando County. The properties within the program are known as Preserves.

  • Chinsegut Hill
  • Lake Townsen Preserve
  • Cypress Lakes Preserve
  • Peck Sink Preserve

A: No, Weeki Wachee Preserve is owned and operated by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Visit Weeki Wachee Preserve website for details.

A: Most forms of passive recreation are encouraged at the ESL Preserves including hiking, birding, and picnicking.  Fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, and bike trail access are available at select preserves.  For more information on amenities see the Preserve directory. 

A: Yes, leashed dogs are allowed at most preserves. Nothing is better that enjoying nature with man’s best friend. Please see preserve listing for specific properties and please be courteous to others and pick up after your pet.

A: Yes, Geo-caching is allowed at Cypress Lake, Fickett Hammock and Lake Townsen preserves. To place a geo-cache on an ESL Preserve you must obtain a no-cost permit from the Department.  Geo-cache placement applications can be requested by emailing ESL@hernandocounty.us

A: There is a parking fee for equestrian trailers at Lake Townsen Preserve.  Please visit the Parking Passes website for rates.
