Rules For Watering
New Plant Material

Establishment of new plant material (including sod) may require extra applications of water. To
provide for this, a special limited time watering restriction may be used. See below:

Day 1-30: You may water your new plant material daily, but only before
8:00 am OR After 6:00 pm.

Day 31-60: You may water your new plant material three (3) days per week if
necessary, based on the last digit of your house number.
Odd Addresses may water only: Monday, Wednesday, & Saturday
Even Addresses may water only: Tuesday, Thursday, & Sunday

REMEMBER: Only irrigation zones containing more than 50% new plant
material are eligible to be used according to the days and times above.

New Sod Establishment Schedule
To qualify for the new sod establishment schedule, new sod must be installed in 50 percent or more of your lawn. Please see the Southwest Florida Water Management District Fact Sheet for Grass Seed if you are installing grass seed.

Day 1-10: Water 2-3 times a day for 5-10 minutes. It is important to keep newly laid sod moist 
(not drenched) during the first week.

Day 11-20: water once a day, Applying about 1/4" of water 
Day 12-30: water every day, applying 1/2" of water

Day 31-60

If your turf/sod has rooted (by pulling on a piece of sod) if it has some resistance it has begun to take root. water 1/2" to 3/4" every other day. (3x/week)

During the period watering restrictions require that.

If your address ends in an even number you may water (only during the established period) on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

If your address ends in an odd number you may water (only during the established period) on Monday, Wednesday, And Saturday.

On day 61 you must water only by the 1 day a week watering schedule.

HCUD holds monthly rain barrel workshop open to Hernando County Citizens

Rain Barrel Workshop

Attendance for educational purposes is free. Rain barrels are $67, payable by check or money order only. Payments must be received before the workshop to maintain your spot. Payments can be mail or dropped off to HCUD. Make check payable to HCUD. If mailed make sure to label envelope. "ATTN: RAIN BARREL". Each person in attendance may only purchase one barrel. We allow purchases up to four barrels per household. HCUD member who purchase a rain barrel can receive a $30 credit to their water bill for the first barrel purchased.

  • Rain Barrels are available for Hernando County residents Only.

  • You can purchase a barrel for every attendee over the age of five to the workshop. i.e., a couple can purchase two barrels, etc. There is a limit of four barrels per household. The $30 rebate applies to the first rain barrel only.

To register, you can either call (352) 540-6230 or send an email to copitts@hernandocounty.us containing your address, names of attendees and your status as an HCUD customer or well user for our rebate program. You may also register in person at our office.

A workshop with rain barrel and compost bin portions usually lasts around two hours. Each section is typically around an hour long. 

  • Compost bins are free and available to Hernando County residents only. One bin per household

  • 55 gallon EnviroWorld Rain Barrels are $67
  • If you are a customer of Hernando County Utilities, you will receive a one-time $30 credit on your water bill for purchasing a rain barrel and installing it at your home
  • We can only take checks or money orders for this opportunity.
