What’s Covered?

The solid waste disposal assessment is a non-ad valorem assessment billed annually since 1991 to all residential home owners in Hernando County. This assessment is the method of generating revenue to cover costs for the construction, operation and maintenance of the solid waste system which is comprised of the Croom Landfill (closed), The Northwest Waste Management Landfill (open), the West Hernando Convenience Center (open), the East Hernando Convenience Center (open), the Construction and Debris Landfill, the Household Hazardous Waste program, the Waste Tire program, and the Recycling program.

What’s Not Covered?

The solid waste disposal assessment does not cover the cost of collection (garbage pickup) of the solid waste. Republic Services of Florida and the City of Brooksville (depending on your home location) collects and transports your garbage to the Landfill. The resident pays for the collection of the garbage directly to the hauler. The solid waste assessment pays for the proper disposal of the solid waste and is on your annual tax bill.

Who Pays the Solid Waste Assessment?

Hernando County assesses all residential units (single family and multi-family up to 4 units) annually for solid waste (garbage) disposal and is billed a flat fee. It’s included on the property tax bills issued by the Hernando County Tax Collector.

Interim Solid Waste Assessment Ordinance

The Interim Solid Waste Assessment Ordinance (#99-17) became effective September 1, 1999. The ordinance establishes the solid waste disposal assessment is due and payable on all new residential units for the interim between construction, completion and placement of the assessment on the property tax bill. The assessment will be prorated and the amount depends upon the month the certificate of occupancy is issued.

Visit the Utilities Department website to pay the interim assessment invoice and make sure you enter the account number from the assessment invoice (not your water invoice).

Attention: Title Companies / Closing Agents

The solid waste assessment is levied against the parcel and is subject to penalties and lien activities if the assessment is unpaid.
