EOC Alert #5 - Tropical Storm Nicole

EOC ALERT - Hernando County Government - Hernando County Emergency Management 

EVENT: Tropical Storm Nicole

EOC LEVEL OF ACTIVATION: Level 2 - Partial 

CURRENT SITUATION

Hurricane Nicole’s center is 230 miles east-southeast of Sebring, is a Category 1 with winds of 75 mph, and is moving west at 12 mph. Nicole made landfall in southeast Florida Wednesday evening, November 9, 2022. Maximum sustained winds are forecast to be anywhere from 20 - 30 mph for Hernando County, with gusts to 65 mph overnight. The current forecast for our area has 2”-4” possible for rainfall. Hernando County has also been placed in a Storm Surge Watch with a possible surge Thursday night (November 10, 2022) of 3 – 5 ft if Hurricane Nicole moves into the Gulf of Mexico. There is a potential for isolated flash flooding of urban areas, creeks, and low-lying areas.

 

WATCH, WARNINGS, ADVISORIES:
• A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Hernando County
• A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for Hernando County

IMPACTS:
• Possible 2”-4” of rainfall for the current forecast. Tropical storm force winds in rain bands as they enter central and western Florida Wednesday night.
• Wind forecast for possible maximum sustained winds at 20 – 30 mph with Tropical Storm wind gusts to 65 mph Wednesday and Thursday.
• Possible storm surge on Thursday night of 3 – 5 feet if Nicole moves into the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday.

RECOMMENDED ACTIONS
• As wind speeds increase the chance of downed power poles and power lines increases. Do not approach and/or touch downed poles and lines.
• Do not drive through standing water and flooded areas, turn around. Once in a safe location please call in any flooded areas to the EOC at 352-754-4083. “Turn around don’t drown”.
