With a over 200 employees, the County Utilities
Department is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and management of all county-owned
water and wastewater
treatment plants, distribution systems, collection and transmission facilities, and all
county solid waste disposal facilities and recycling programs, in compliance with County,
State, and Federal rules and regulations.
Focusing
on it's customers and educating the public on the importance of water resource protection
and conservation, the Utilities department facilitated the formation of the "Citizens
for W.A.T.E.R." group which annually develops and coordinates a schedule of water
awareness seminars for the public. The department also sponsors the "Groundwater
Guardian Team" This group is categorized by the Hernando County Commission and
organized under the auspices of the Utilities Department and the National Groundwater
Foundation. Its twelve members represent agriculture, citizens, city and county government,
development, education, investor-owned and county water utilities, mining, power, recreation,
and the water management district.
Objectives
Design and construct the force main from
the Hernando Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Spring Hill Sub regional Wastewater
Treatment Plant.
Begin execution of the Water and Wastewater
20-Year Master Plans.
Design and construct two wells and one
million gallon ground storage tank at Gretna Road.
Design and construct two wells and one
million gallon ground storage tank at Suncoast Boulevard.
Acquire land in vicinity of Centralia
Road for the North-Central Well field and Water Plant.
Continue a Countywide water conservation
and quality protection plan with goals for per capita water consumption. Total water
production of 150 gallons per day per capita, total residential water usage of 110 gallons
per day per capita, and unaccounted water losses no greater than 10 percent of total
production.
Continue projects identified in Water
Master Plan to reduce pressure problems in the Spring Hill service area.
Continue odor control activities and
study at the Osowaw Boulevard Waste Water Treatment Plant.
Continue to implement universal curbside
household garbage and recyclable pickups.
Analyze, evaluate, bid, select, and implement a new advanced computer system for the
Customer Service and Billing sections.
Analyze, evaluate, coordinate, program,
train, and implement Global Information System (GIS) interface for the asset management
system.
Analyze, program, train, and coordinate
implementation of a wireless field based work order process utilizing the asset management
system.
The current facility operations include:
2 lined Class I garbage disposal cells.
1 construction and utilization debris landfill.
A Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center.
A Recyclable Materials Processing Center.
Waste Tire Collection Center.
Leachate Collection and Storage Tank System.
A scrap metal sorting and storage area.

one day per week watering restriction for six (6) months and is now
following the Southwest Florida Water Management District watering
