The Florida Department of Environmental
Protection is the lead agency in state
government for environmental management
and stewardship. The department
administers regulatory programs and
issues permits for air, water and waste
management. It oversees the State’s land
and water conservation program, Florida
Forever, and manages the nationally
award-winning Florida Park Service.
Florida
offers some of the nation’s most
scenic coastlines, but preventing
degradation of our seascape requires
balanced, common sense management.
Understanding the complexities of
our resources and learning how we
affect our environment, for better
or for worse, will improve how we
manage our coastal environment. We
have implemented ecosystem
management by introducing marinas,
boatyards and boaters to simple,
innovative solutions called the
Florida Clean Marina Program.
US Environmental Protection Agency
The US
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
was established in 1970 by the White
House and Congress in response to a
growing demand for cleaner water, air
and land. EPA works to develop and
enforce regulations that implement
environmental laws enacted by Congress.
EPA is responsible for researching and
setting national standards for a variety
of environmental programs, and delegates
to states and tribes the responsibility
for issuing permits and for monitoring
and enforcing compliance. Where national
standards are not met, EPA can issue
sanctions and take other steps to assist
the states and tribes in reaching the
desired levels of environmental quality.
