The primary objective of signals, signs and markings is to provide for safe and efficient traffic flow through intersections, along routes, and in street networks along with regulating, warning or guiding traffic on all streets and highways.

The impact of a traffic signal can be both positive and negative:

Improve orderly movement of traffic Interrupt heavy traffic at intervals to allow pedestrian and side street traffic to cross or enter the main street traffic stream Increase the traffic-handling capability of the intersection. We will get up in the middle of the night or leave our Thanksgiving dinner to put a STOP sign back up or repair a traffic signal. If you observe any down or missing STOP and YIELD signs or other traffic signal operational concerns on the County road system call the Hernando County Sheriffs Dept. at 754-6850 and they can reach us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In the meantime, the Sheriffs Department will assign a Deputy to direct traffic at the affected intersection in order to avert an accident.
