Who We Are and
What We Do.

Hernando County
Extension Service

Who We Are

The Cooperative Extension Service is nationwide and was established by the Smith-Lever Act of 1914. It is a partnership between state land grant universities, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the county governments throughout the nation. All of these groups share in the planning, financing, and operation of extension programs. In Florida, the Cooperative Extension Service is administered by the University of Florida.

Our Mission

To provide scientifically-based agricultural, human and natural resources knowledge that citizens use in making decisions which contribute to an improved life.

Services

The Extension Service is an educational program which exists to serve the educational needs of the local people. Extension Agents extend the resources of the University of Florida (our land grant university) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the following program areas: agriculture, horticulture, family and consumer sciences and 4-H. Educational programs reach out to people through meetings, seminars, educational materials, consultations, demonstrations, field days and computer networking. Local advisory committees help Extension agents to identify needs and determine how best to address them.
