News About
Licensing: Animal
Services has contracted with PetData, Inc., a Texas based
company, to administer the licensing program in Hernando
County. Animal licensing is PetData’s
only business and they have been
providing licensing services to municipalities for over eight
years. In addition to Hernando County, they administer successful
animal licensing programs for Dallas TX, Jacksonville FL,
Kansas City MO, Martin County FL, and others.
Many pet
owners who have not purchased licenses will be receiving notices
from PetData reminding them that it is time to license their
pets. If you receive a notice, follow the instructions
on the notice or those provided below to license your pet. If
you have already licensed your pet, the notice will have instructions
for notifying PetData so that you will not receive future notices.
Remember
that rabies tags are not licenses. Just because your animal
has a rabies vaccination does not mean that your pet is licensed.
In order to be sure that your pet is licensed check for a tag
that has “Hernando County Animal License” printed on it. If
you do not have this tag, then your pet is not licensed.

information about licensing, please call PetData, Inc. toll

Why
License?
Rabies
Control: Proper
licensing is essential to ensure compliance with rabies vaccination
and to reduce the potential for rabies outbreak in our community. Licensing
registers vaccinated animals for easy tracking in the case
of animal bites or other rabies exposures. This increases
the likelihood of finding an aggressive animal or an animal
that has bitten, and reduces the number of people that must
receive the post-exposure rabies vaccinations after being
attacked. Animal Services is dedicated to reducing rabies
in our community to eliminate the potential of an outbreak
like many of our neighboring counties have endured.
Responsible
Ownership: In
addition to rabies control, licensing encourages responsible
pet ownership. Licensed animals are less likely to
enter an animal shelter, and if they are picked up, they
are more likely to be returned to their owners. Lowering
the number of animals entering the shelter and locating more
owners of lost animals reduces euthanasia rates.
Free Trip
Home: If
your animal is picked up for the first time and is currently
licensed and sterilized you may be offered a Free Trip Home,
a savings of up to $200. In order to qualify for this
incentive your pet must be sterilized, currently vaccinated
for rabies, and currently licensed. The Free Trip Home
is offered to the owner of pets that are running loose and
have not shown any signs of aggression, caused property damage,
or participated in other nuisance or destructive behavior.
Programs
to Benefit the Community: A
portion of licensing proceeds is being set aside to benefit
the community and the animals. Funds will be collected
for approximately one year and then special programs will
be offered as funds allow. Some of the programs may
include:
-
A sterilization
rebate for citizens
-
Rabies
vaccination clinics
-
Educational
opportunities
-
Adopt-A-Thons
